Happy Easter

As all of you know, today is Easter Sunday. Easter is a feast day, as it celebrates the resurection of Jesus Christ, after his crucifiction on Good Friday and his descent into Hades for the duration of Holy Saturday. Easter historically is the begining of the Easter Season that lasts for 40 days, ending on Ascension Day. However in modern times it lasts for 50 days, up until Pentecost. The date of Easter varies from year to year, so it is referred to as a moveable feast day. The date is now celebrated on the first Sunday after the full moon, on or after the the vernal equinox.

One of the oldest symbols associated with this time of year is the EGG. It’s relation to Easter dates back to the ancient Persians who decorated eggs in celebration of their New Year, which to the Persians was the vernal (spring) equinox. Eggs, (along with rabbits, chicks, and lambs) have allways been considered a symbol of fertility, so the connection with spring is clearly evident. Once early Christianity started to spread around the globe, traditional regional customs were adopted into the christain festivities.

In western culture, especially in America and Europe, one of the most recognized symbols of Easter is a rabbit, or “Easter Bunny”. As previously stated, rabbits are a yet another ancient symbol relating to spring and fertility. Anyone who has ever raised rabbits, can certianly understand why.
